Commemorates World Glaucoma Week – 2025
An educational seminar on Glaucoma was organized by the Eye Care Center, UCFM, lead by the Consultant Eye Surgeon, Prof. Madhuwanthi Dissanayake, Director & and the team collaborating with the Institute for Health Policy, Sri Lanka to mark the world Glaucoma Week 2025 on the 11th of March, 2025, at the Eye Care Center, Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo
Prof Vajira Dissanayake, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo, Sri Lanka was the chief guest at the event.
Prof Madhuwanthi Dissanayake explained that Glaucoma is a disease affecting the optic nerve and that eye pressure is an important risk factor. She stressed the importance of Detecting glaucoma early to prevent the grave consequence of blindness and how glaucoma can be effectively controlled with regular use of eye drops.
Focusing on the theme this year “Unite for a Glaucoma free world” Dr Malinda de Silva and Dr Nilmini Wijemunige highlighted the pioneering work on incorporating AI into Glaucoma screening with the hand held mobile phone supported portable fundus camera.
Prof Shanti Goonewardene and Prof Ajantha Hapuarachchi participated as special guests and national media covered the event to take the message across to the public.
