Light For The Eyes: Bringing MIGS To The People

As part of World Glaucoma Week (February 17–21, 2025), Dr. Prasanna Venkatesh Ramesh and Dr. Shivani Dixit spearheaded a transformative initiative at Mahathma Eye Hospital Pvt Ltd, Tamil Nadu, India, successfully performing 24 free Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS) procedures for economically disadvantaged patients. This campaign aimed to bridge the gap in glaucoma care by expanding access to cutting-edge surgical interventions, ensuring that advanced treatment options reach those who need them most.
The procedures included Suture GATT, Kahook Dual Blade (KDB) goniotomy, Bent Ab Interno Needle Goniectomy (BANG), and Endoscopic Cyclophotocoagulation (ECP)—offering superior safety, faster recovery, and enhanced postoperative outcomes compared to conventional techniques. The camp was efficiently organized through the dedicated efforts of the Mahathma Eye Hospital Private Limited team, under the logistical support of Mr. Ashik Azad and Team MCMI (Mahathma Centre Of Moving Images), ensuring smooth execution and optimal patient care.
By delivering these life-changing procedures, we reinforced the critical importance of early glaucoma detection and intervention, while advocating for equitable access to modern ophthalmic advancements. This initiative aligns with the global vision of “Uniting for a Glaucoma-Free World,” underscoring the urgency of continued awareness, education, and treatment efforts to combat preventable blindness.
