Glaucoma Screening, Talk and Survey

WORLD GLAUCOMA WEEK ACTIVITIES (MARCH 12-18, 2017)
IN MYANMAR
Glaucoma screening, public health talk and survey on knowledge of glaucoma were done in 5 hospitals in Yangon, Mandalay and Magway during World Glaucoma Week.
1. Glaucoma screening:
2300 new patients attending the out-patient departments of the above hospitals were screened for glaucoma with regards to optic disc and intraocular pressure.
2. Survey on knowledge of glaucoma:
New patients attending the out-patient departments were interviewed and 955 patients participated. About 50% knew that people over age 40 are more likely to get glaucoma causing irreversible vision loss if intraocular pressure is not well controlled promptly. 75% knew that although glaucoma could not be cured, it could be controlled by eyedrops, laser or surgery.
