Living Glaucoma: A Patient’s Journey

Miss Suraya was previously an employee of an International Financial Institute. She was diagnosed to have glaucoma late Nov 2019 and immediately lost her right eyesight thereafter. She is very into creating awareness among the public and has been actively promoting events organized by Malaysia Glaucoma Society during world glaucoma week since 2022 and was a lucky draw winner in one of the photo competition that year when the nation light up green in most iconic building and places following our support to JGS initiatives.

In WGW2023, Suraya was interviewed by TV3 slot “Malaysia Hari Ini” a national tv station which literally translated to “Malaysia Today” to share her glaucoma journey and recapped an Ophthalogist statement the year before that why creating this awareness is an on-going battle.

This year, WGW2024 she was invited as panel speaker to share a Patient’s journey at the Opening Ceremony WGW2024 graced by YB Dato Lukanisman Bin Awang Sauni, Deputy Minister of Health.

The National World Glaucoma Week celebration is an annual program organized by the Malaysian Glaucoma Society (MGS) in collaboration with the Malaysian Ministry of Health, the Malaysian Society of Ophthalmology, the College of Ophthalmology, the Malaysian Academy of Medicine, the National University of Malaysia, the University of Malaya and Universiti Sains Malaysia . The theme of this year’s celebration is “Uniting for a Glaucoma-Free world” in line with the vision of the Malaysian Glaucoma Association.

To further established a meaningful week, Suraya has commited to Walk for Sight in line with KKM’s initiative for the nation to walk 10,000 steps daily. To show her support, Suraya walked the extra mile 20,000 steps daily on 10-16 March 2024 through Brisk Walk Malaysia FB Group at national level and PacerApp at International level creating more awareness for the people who is already aware that health is wealth. Suraya hopes this will open more EYES on the important of getting periodic #GetTested #EyeTest for ALL. Sharing a week’s campaign of WGW this year goes beyond the fundamental as Suraya cross-sharing the Power of Association which includes mostly WGA, WGW, TGF, Glaucoma UK, WHO, IAPB is the messsage to ensure WGW2024 makes a meaningful impact towards 2030InSight another roadmap to how important our Eyes are #LoveYourEye #EyeHealth

Suraya will continue walk the talk… walks 10,000 daily God’s willing to ensure KKM’s initiative since 2009 literally materialise this year and that another panelist sharing during the Opening ceremony, Mr Steven Chan gets done. The different between the panelist, Steven has gone blind both eyes while Suraya is still walking in the tunnel of Dimmess. Between both of them, they understand what the journey is all about. Suraya appeared in DIA podcast in 2022 when, Stevens Chan the founder of DID reknown DIA invited her to talk about her Glaucoma journey. Suraya tried to tell how important WGW is that that we have a fighting chance on creating awareness.

This year WGW2024, the message is clear cut… Uniting for a Glaucoma Free World! a transcient borderless shout out.
