“Shining a Light on Glaucoma: Global Awareness Event”
Glaucoma is a chronic eye disease characterized by increased intraocular pressure, which can lead to damage to the optic nerve and loss of vision.
On March 6, 2024, in the Republic of Kazakhstan, in the city of Aktobe, in the City Polyclinic No. 3, the Center for Outpatient Ophthalmology and Eye Microsurgery, in the glaucoma center, an action dedicated to the World Glaucoma Week was held. The event was organized by: M.B. Petukhova- an ophthalmologist of the highest category, and M.K. Taushanova- doctoral student at the West Kazakhstan Marat Opanov Medical University.
The action was divided into three blocks:
1) Measurement of intraocular pressure.
2) Complete examination of patients with increased ophthalmotonus.
3) Conducting a glaucoma school among patients.
During the campaign, intraocular pressure was measured in 54 people, 3 of them were diagnosed with ophthalmohypertension, and they underwent a full examination. One patient was diagnosed with primary open-angle glaucoma.
This event is held annually and is aimed at early detection and prevention of glaucoma, helping to preserve patients’ eyesight.
